This project for a 2-family coastal residence is located on a lush half-acre plot within a first-row ocean-front compound on Galu Beach. The design is an investigation into environmentally responsive residential design, balancing a tight-site to contain two fully detached dwellings, allowing for flexible occupation options, and adopting a planning strategy to mitigate on-site privacy challenges by adapting a “linear courtyard” housing typology. Detached pavilions provide degrees of privacy within - and between - the 2 dwellings, and result in a playful reinterpretation of a traditional inward looking courtyard house.
